Helping others is a good thing in itself.  Doubtless, you have been on the receiving end of help many times in your life.  Now in giving back some of that help to others, the rewards you receive may be a revelation.  You will discover the circle of giving.  What kind of effort you enter into is an individual matter.  But here are some suggestions to get you started.

There are many children who need help.  You may find that you can be a tutor or mentor to a child after school.  You may act as a volunteer aide in a classroom.  You might become a Big Brother or Big Sister.  When you ask friends, you will learn of many organizations in your community that will connect you with a needy child.  And what child doesn’t need more help and attention?

The elderly often need help also.  This may be a ride to the grocery store once a week, or transportation to a doctor’s appointment.  Those who live in rural areas where there is no public transportation may be desperate for this kind of help. You may also be able to help with simple tasks around their home.  Sometimes simple companionship is the most valued gift.

It is said that “charity begins at home.”  Keep your eyes open and you may find a family member in real need of your help, be it tutoring, counseling, or just some fun time together.

Likewise, when you work as a family to help others, it strengthens your family bonds.  You might volunteer together at a soup kitchen, or delivering “meals on wheels,” or giving respite care.  Again, you will find many opportunities nearby in your community.

Experience shows that people who volunteer to help others gain a new and positive sense of themselves. Your personal development will surely benefit. If your life had become dullwill again become an adventure. again become an adventure.
